Roomful of Teeth

Roomful of Teeth is a multi-Grammy Award-winning vocal ensemble devoted to the boundless expressive capacity of the human voice. Founder and Artistic Director Brad Wells has handpicked a group of the most versatile classically trained singers from around the United States, whose voices cover a five-octave range from ground-shaking lows to dog-whistle highs. Through rigorous study with masters of vocal traditions the world over, Roomful of Teeth continually expands its vocabulary of singing techniques and, through an ongoing commissioning process, forges not just new music but an entirely new repertoire.

Roomful of Teeth has developed a significant discography through a decade-long relationship with New Amsterdam Records. Their eponymous first album, released in 2012, was awarded a Grammy Award for Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance. Their second album, Render (2015), was also nominated for a Grammy Award in the same category. The album The Colorado (2016) – the soundtrack to a revolutionary form of documentary that is both narrated and sung – was praised for its “didactic drive and meditative awe" (The New York Times) through its exploration of the history and future of the Colorado River. And the group’s participation on Yo-Yo Ma’s Silkroad Ensemble’s album Sing Me Home, helped the recording win the 2016 Grammy for Best World Music Album.

Roomful of Teeth has received extensive media coverage including an appearance on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts, a full-length profile feature in The New Yorker by Burkhard Bilger, and dozens of interviews. A number of their recordings have been featured on television and in film, including Netflix’s Dark and Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé.

The members of Roomful of Teeth reside around the United States, from San Francisco to San Antonio to New York. https://www.roomfulofteeth.org/
